When it comes to making alcohol at home, most people still have reservations about it and rightfully so. Unfortunately, the reservations are made on false information. Here I will bust the 3 top myths about making alcohol at home:

Myth #1: Homemade alcohol can make you blind

Before I begin, let me tell you that their are two types of alcohol. Ethanol and Methanol. Ethanol is drinking alcohol that you find in every beer, wine or any other drinkable alcoholic beverage. The term ‘Ethanol’ is a scientific term for alcohol that consumers consume every single day. Plus it can only be produced from a chemical reaction that is created when you mix sugar and yeast. Both which are 100% natural and edible substances.

Methanol on the other hand is produced from ‘wood’ and burning of wood. In the most recent news, I heard that some poor people in India (Villagers) learned about creating alcohol by burning wood and naturally died of poisoning and a lot of them went blind too. This is where the whole making alcohol can make you blind thing started from - burning of wood that is. Now if these folks used the simple method of combining sugar and yeast, they would still be alive and getting drunk too.

So in conclusion, if you are using yeast and sugar, you should be fine but as you will create ‘Ethanol’ only or drinkable alcohol. If you start burning wood, then you will create ‘Methanol’. Please stay away from this as ‘Methanol’ is used in making professional and hazardous materials such as anti-freeze and etc. So stay away from burning wood of any kind would ya :)

Myth #2: Homemade alcohol doesn’t taste good at all

I don’t know how people came up with this assumption - in fact, homemade alcohol when made right, actually tastes a lot better then stuff in the liquor stores and such. After all, you are using fresh ingredients, and you consume the drinks as soon as they are made. When you make alcoholic beverages at home, their are no preservatives or weird chemicals required to preserve what you’ve made. That is why when people start making their own wine and booze, they hardly go back to the liquor store again. If you use fresh quality fruits, vegetables or juices, your alcoholic beverages will always be delicious and healthier.

Myth #3: Yeast is bad for you

Again one of those things that I just don’t get. People have been using yeast for thousands of years to bake bread. If yeast was so bad, we would all stop eating bread. The Yeast used for baking and most kinds of wine and alcohol making process is called Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Don’t bother pronouncing it as its just a scientific term. Yeast is also a natural substance that is found all around us even in our own bodies. You can’t get any more natural then that folks :)
