When you use apples and put them through the ‘fermentation’ process, an apple cider is created. An apple cider is just another word for an alcoholic beverage made from apples. The term “apple cider” or “hard cider” is mainly used in North America. To our neighbors across the pond, UK to be exact, they like to make pear ciders and even have their own term for it such as “perry”.
In fact, they drink more hard cider in England then anywhere in the world. I guess you can say pretty much a lot of European countries enjoy their cider. Countries such as France, Germany and Spain are among the world’s largest consumers of apple cider.
Since apples are high in phenolics, it is actually one of the healthiest alcoholic drinks you can have second only to the many benefits of wine. If you use organic apples, then your are tremendously increasing the health benefits of your drink. The taste of an apple cider again depends on what kind of apples are you using? The sweeter the apple, the sweeter the cider, the dryer the apple, the dryer the taste. A lot of apple ciders are actually presented on their dryness or sweetness levels. I’ve noticed that red apples are a lot sweeter then green apples so if you prefer the dry taste, try using green apples.
